9/11 victim’s remains identified 23 years later

The 1,650th victim in the attacks on 9/11 has been identified as John Ballantine Niven after NYC officials examined his remains. Niven, 44, of Oyster Bay, was a senior vice president at Aon Risk Services on the 105th floor of Tower 2, according to the New York Times. He was among the nearly 3,000 people killed after terrorists hijacked and crashed airplanes into the famous New York City landmark. Medical examiners identified many of the remains of victims through advanced DNA analysis, but 40% remain unidentified, per the mayor’s office. "While the pain from the losses on September 11th never leaves us, the possibility of new identifications can offer solace to the families of victims. I’m grateful for the ongoing work from the Chief Medical Examiner that honors the memory of John Ballantine Niven and all those we lost," said NYC Mayor Eric Adams. Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino said, “This advance in technology helps bring peace to Mr. Niven’s family and allows him to rest in peace." Niven is survived by his mother, two sisters, brother, wife and son, who was 18 months old at the time of his death.
