Venus Williams and Leylah Fernandez continued their remarkable run at the US Open after they advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows. The pair defeated the 12th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova and Zhang Shuai 6-3, 6-1 in 74 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium in the third round. Williams and Fernandez, who were granted a wildcard in the tournament, are yet to drop a set in the tournament, beating two seeded pairings in the process. The duo took a 3-0 lead early in the first set, and despite being pegged back, Williams and Fernandez broke again before serving out the set. The North American pairing broke Zhang in the third game of the second frame; however, they were once again reeled back in by the opposition. Williams, 45, and Fernandez, 22, kept their composure, however, breaking Zhang again before Fernandez sealed the win with a volley at the net.
