2025’s Must-See Astronomical Events: Eclipses, Supermoons & More

2025 will be a fascinating year for astronomy and space exploration enthusiasts, with several unmissable events on the calendar. Among the highlights are 12 full moons, three supermoons and two total lunar eclipses, as well as the launch of the Artemis II mission by NASA. The first total lunar eclipse of 2025 will take place at dawn on March 14, when the so-called “Worm Moon” will turn red for 65 minutes.  The second eclipse, occurring at dawn on September 8 during the "Harvest Moon," will last 82 minutes and be most visible in Asia and Australia. The supermoons, which occur when the full moon is at its closest point to the Earth, also promise to enchant.  They are set to take place on October 6, during the “Harvest Supermoon," November 5, during the “Beaver Supermoon," and December 4, during the “Cold Supermoon.” The year's full moons, while stunning, also reflect historical names tied to agricultural traditions. These include the “Wolf Moon” on January 13, the “Snow Moon” on February 12 and the “Rose Moon” on April 12.  Other important full moons include the “Flower Moon” on May 12, the “Strawberry Moon” on June 11 and the “Deer Moon” on July 10. Another highlight of the year will be the launch of the Artemis II mission in September. This will be the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon since 1972, paving the way for Artemis III, which will take astronauts to the lunar surface in 2026.  The year 2025 promises to be unforgettable both for stargazers and space exploration.
