We all know face masks are a lovely treat for the skin but using them too often could be causing more harm than good. Never apply a face mask every evening or more than once a week as doing so could cause ‘over-masking’. The symptoms include redness, breakouts, itching, burning sensation, and dry, flaky skin. Using too many face masks can strip the skin of its natural oils and friendly bacteria. Both of which are necessary for maintaining healthy skin. Skin expert Dr. Parisha Acharya recommends those with very sensitive skin to use a mask once a week. Hydrating masks can be used twice a week and exfoliating, brightening and anti-aging masks between 1-2 times a week. Dr. Acharya noted the importance of doing a patch test before applying the full face mask to ensure you don’t have a reaction. Fans of face masks should try ‘multi-masking’. When you apply different masks to different areas of the face. It allows your skin to get the products it needs without the risk of causing ‘over-masking’. Ensure that you supplement any mask with a good skin-care regimen to target and tackle your individual skin concerns, Dr. Parisha Acharya, Waterhouse Young Clinic - Refinery29
