A jury has ordered Paul Haggis to pay publicist Haleigh Breest $7.5 million in damages in her civil rape case against the filmmaker. Breest brought the case against him in 2017, accusing him of raping her and forcing him to perfomr oral sex on him after a premiere in 2013. Haggis will not face any prison time but he could face extra punitive damages. During closing argument Breest’s lawyer Ilana Maazel showed the jury several text messages she sent to a friend after the alleged rape. In one of the messages Breest said, “and I keep saying no”, a statement her lawyer described as “the five most important words in the case”. Haggis argued that the publicist was flirtatious and claimed that she initiated kisses and oral sex and it was completely consensual. The screenwriter has said that he is “very disappointed” with the result of the case and will continue to try and clear his name.
