Books That Shaped America: Books That Shaped America: [The Words of César Chávez]

Author and historian Miriam Pawel explored [The Words of Cesar Chavez]. The 2002 anthology, edited by Richard J. Jensen and John C. Hammerback, presents Chavez's major speeches and writings and discusses their impact on the farm workers' movement starting in the early 1960's. Ms. Pawel is the author of [The Crusades of Cesar Chavez]. The program also includes a clip of Chavez's remarks during a 1985 appearance on a C-SPAN call-in show; audio from a 1972 speech Chavez gave at the end of the grape strike; audio from remarks Chavez made to the Commonwealth Club of California in 1984; a live interview with Chavez's son, Paul; and remarks from a high school teacher, who explained how she teaches Chavez's words in her class. This was the final part of "Books That Shaped America," a 10-part series, created in partnership with the Library of Congress, that examines major works of literature that have had a significant impact on the country and public policy.
