Tortoise Believed To Be Extinct For 100 Years Found Alive

A giant tortoise species that was believed to be extinct has been found on the Galapagos island of Fernandina. The tortoise, named Fernanda, is the first of her species identified in over 100 years. A male Fernandina Island giant tortoise was first discovered in 1906, while the female tortoise was discovered in 2019. Scientists extracted DNA from the 1906 specimen and compared it to the 2019 tortoise. Both animals are members of the same species and distinctly different from the other 13 species of Galapagos giant tortoise. Fernanda is believed to be over 50 years old but will live to around 200 years old. Experts are hoping to find a male tortoise on the island so they can start a breeding program. Fernanda is now living at the Galapagos Tortoise Center.
