An Italian man, who was in the process of transitioning, was found to be five months pregnant after undergoing a mastectomy. The individual, who assumed the name Marco, was in the process of having a hysterectomy when the discovery was made. Doctors at a hospital in Rome raised concerns for the welfare of the fetus given the advanced stage of Marco’s transition. He has developed additional body and facial hair after bouts of hormone therapy, which experts say can pose a cardiological risk for the baby. "If halting the therapy is not immediate, there could be consequences, especially in the first trimester, which is an important time for the development of the baby’s organs. It depends on the timing of the suspension of testosterone doses," said Giulia Senfonte, an endocrinologist expert on gender therapy. Marco is expected to go through with the pregnancy and will be the baby’s biological mother, but registered as its father. According to reports online, Marco decided to transition years ago after feeling uncomfortable with himself as a woman.
