Speaker Johnson Holds News Conference on Day 37 of Government Shutdown

"The future of the Democrats was set in New York City. A 34-year-old Marxist is now the leader of the Democratic Party, and it is a very dangerous road for them to go down," said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) as he spoke about Election Day results from the previous day and and the election of Zohran Mamdani (D) as mayor of New York City. The speaker also said the election results yielded no surprises because cities and state that are typically led by Democrats voted for Democrats. The speaker's remarks came as he addressed the press from Capitol Hill on Day 37 of the government shutdown. Speaker Johnson continued to blame Democrats for the shutdown, saying, "as we've noted, there is really nothing for us to negotiate … the Democrats have tried to turn that into a game."
