Champions League To Use Semi-Automated Offside

The Champions League will use a camera-based system to judge offside calls in the group stage of this year's competition. The semi-automated system uses cameras to track the limbs of players and the moment a pass is made. UEFA says the system was tested during last season’s Champions League knock-out stage as well as the whole of Euro 2022. They claim that the technology can make offside decisions “quickly and more accurately” than the current VAR system. This innovative system will allow VAR teams to determine offside situations quickly and more accurately, enhancing the flow of the game and the consistency of the decisions, Roberto Rosetti, UEFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer. The technology will be in place for the Super Cup game between Real Madrid and Eintracht Frankfurt in Helsinki on Aug. 10.
