[Wolford v. Lopez] Oral Argument

The Supreme Court heard oral argument in [Wolford v. Lopez], a case examining whether Hawaii may prohibit the carry of handguns on private property that is open to the public, such as restaurants and stores, unless the property owner gives permission. Gun rights advocates argued the law violated the Second Amendment, Supreme Court precedent, and tradition, and claimed that under the law permit holders could carry their guns only in "exceptionally narrow" circumstances. Hawaii retorted that the law was consistent with American history at its founding, and was not a ban per se but merely required express consent from property owners or their agents. The Hawaii gun law also applies to "sensitive areas" such as public beaches, public parks, and parking areas.
