Man On Plane Charged With Stealing $23,000 From Fellow Passengers

A 52-year-old Chinese man has been charged with allegedly stealing $23,000 from fellow passengers on a flight from Vietnam to Singapore. The man, named Zhang Xiuqiang in court documents, was on board a Scoot flight, which is a budget flight class of Singapore Airlines. An airline spokesperson told CNN it was “aware of an incident” that occurred on board a flight from Ho Chi Minh City on December 16. "Our cabin crew was alerted by a passenger to a suspected theft and activated the Airport Police Division. The passengers involved were escorted off the aircraft for further investigation," a Scoot spokesperson said. Channel NewsAsia reported that Xiuqiang stole 510 million dong ($20,950) from a black messenger bag, citing court documents. He also allegedly took 3 million dong ($123) from a passenger’s backpack and $1,700 from an envelope belonging to a third traveler. "Our operating crew are trained to be vigilant, and alert authorities to any suspicious behavior on board our flights. We also advise our customers to safeguard their valuables at all times," said a Scoot spokesperson. If convicted, Xiuqiang could face up to three years in prison, a fine, or both, for each of the three charges.
