A California family is facing felony charges for defrauding the state’s recycling program. State prosecutors charged eight family members with defrauding the state by importing used bottles and cans from Arizona. The family is said to have imported 178 tons of used cans and bottles over the span of eight months. They allegedly earned $7.6 million from the operation and could now face up to three years in prison. Investigators also found a stash of "illegally imported beverage containers" worth another $1 million. Last year, six people were charged in a similar Arizona-to-California recycling scheme that netted more than $10 million. Previously, at least 93 people were convicted of recycling fraud between 2010 and 2019 in California.
