In the US, pupils’ maths scores declined when the temperature hit 26˚C (79˚F) or above, while Chinese students’ scores fell by the equivalent of 3 months’ schooling when taking tests on days of 32˚C heat. This effect doesn’t just occur on individual days, however. Longer hot spells can have a negative impact on exam scores, even after a year has passed.
