Scottish ultra-marathon runner Joasia Zakrzewski was slapped with a one-year ban after using a car for a portion of a 50-mile race. Zakrzewski competed in the GB Ultras Manchester to Liverpool race when she accepted a ride in a friend’s car. She ended up finishing in third place and penned a letter to the UK Athletics (UKA) independent disciplinary panel. "I accept my actions on the day that I did travel in a car and then later completed the run, crossing the finish line and inappropriately receiving a medal and trophy, which I did not return immediately as I should have done," said Zakrzewski. The panel concluded that Zakrzewski failed to disclose “that she had completed part of the race on a non-competitive basis." As a result, Zakrzewski was banned from competing in any UKA events for 12 months, which includes “coaching, officiating and managing." Tracking data spotted irregularities in her race time, but Zakrzewski told the BBC, “I would never purposely cheat, and it was not a target race." According to the BBC, Zakrzewski became lost, accepted the ride as her leg became sore, and was convinced to finish “in a non-competitive way."
