Novak Djokovic Defends His Controversial Message At French Open

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has defended his decision to send a political message about Kosovo at the French Open. After his first-round victory, Djokovic wrote "Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence" on a TV camera lens. Kosovo, which separated from Serbia in 2008, has seen tensions increase over the past week. On Monday, there were fights with protesters against the election of mayors who are ethnically Albanian. The Kosovan Olympic Committee has called for disciplinary action against Djokovic. However, The International Tennis Federation has stated that political statements are not prohibited at grand slam tournaments. Djokovic, whose father was born in Kosovo, spoke about his remarks later. "Of course, I’m aware that a lot of people would disagree, but it is what it is. It’s something that I stand for. So that’s all," Novak Djokovic.
