Thousands of oil wells previously on land have sunk in the Gulf

A Times-Picayune analysis independently reviewed by researchers at Tulane University estimates more than 3,600 wells once drilled on land or in wetlands are now in open water — a result of decades of erosion, sinking land and rising seas.
