A pigeon that was detained in India for eight months on suspicion of spying for China was released, the Press Trust of India reported. The bird was caught at a port in Mumbai with rings that resembled Chinese characters tied to its legs, per the Associated Press. It was taken to the Bai Sakarbai Dunshaw Petit Hospital for Animals after law enforcement feared it had an ulterior motive. PETA said that it “learned that police had found the pigeon with an illegible message written on her wings." The organization’s Indian branch obtained a certificate for the bird’s freedom, which was later found to be a racing bird from Taiwan, per the AP. A spokesperson for the Taiwan Pigeon Racing Association told Taipai News it’s unclear if this is true as police didn’t release its serial number. Indian authorities have detained other pigeons in the past, one of which was found with a note threatening Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016.
