Just 4% of clinical trials take place in Africa. Here's why that matters

Of the 20,825 clinical trials begun globally in 2023, only 819 were hosted in Africa. Improving Africa’s share of clinical research would have multiple benefits, say experts. It could pave the way to early access to new therapies and cutting-edge treatments tailored to the genetic profiles of local African populations. It could help deliver faster vaccines in the event of disease outbreaks and boost countries’ healthcare systems through clinical trial-related fees.
