Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper formally apologized in the Canadian House of Commons for his country's practice of sending Native Canadian children to church-run residential schools. Many students reported being mentally, physically and sexually abused at the schools, which operated for almost 100 years before being shuttered in the 1970s. Native Canadian members of parliament also spoke.
