Verstappen Handed 10-Place Penalty For Engine Change

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen has received a ten-place grid penalty at the Belgian Grand Prix after exceeding his engine quota on the season. Verstappen suffered an engine failure at the Canadian Grand Prix, pushing him over the maximum engine changes for the year. “I knew of course that it was coming. I wouldn't say that with 10 places extra we have a chance of winning. But again, a race can always be turned upside down with moments,” said Max Verstappen. The amount of internal combustion engines permitted for a season is four, with a fifth, which Verstappen has reached, incurring a penalty. The change is a tactical choice from Red Bull, with the track at Spa-Francorchamps built for overtaking and giving Verstappen a chance of working his way through the field. Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship by 76 points ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris as he looks to win his fourth straight title. The 26-year-old hasn’t won in each of the last three races, his longest drought without a victory since the 2021 season.
