Airline forced to rebalance planes because first class seats are too heavy

Swiss International Air Lines is making unexpected adjustments to its Airbus A330 fleet after discovering that its new first-class seats, set to debut in 2025, are too heavy. The upgraded suites, featuring six-foot walls and locking doors, are causing the aircraft to become nose-heavy, prompting the airline to install a balancing plate. The changes come as airlines face a trend where first and business-class seats are getting heavier for added privacy, while economy seats are becoming lighter. While Swiss’s Boeing 777s won’t face this issue, the A330's nose-heavy design requires this special adjustment. Swiss stressed that this isn’t a planning error but rather a result of evolving seat designs that are more spacious and luxurious. The new seats were driven by customer demand for modernized interiors, particularly on long-haul flights. However, the airline acknowledged that these new luxurious seats are less environmentally efficient.
