Termites made a fascinating rattle sound when they shook together in a family's backyard. Footage shows the insects trembling synchronously and making a quivering sound while crawling at the base of a tree in Phetchabun, Thailand, on December 11. If a termite infestation is large enough, soldier termites can be heard banging their heads or shaking their bodies against tunnel walls. The behaviour, which can produce a rattling noise when many soldiers engage in it simultaneously, functions as a warning signal to alert other termites within the colony to potential danger.
