Elon Musk Demands Government Shutdown Until Trump Is Sworn In

Elon Musk has publicly called for a federal government shutdown until Donald Trump assumes office in January, intensifying political tensions in Washington. The billionaire entrepreneur criticized a bipartisan funding bill, H.R. 10445, intended to avert a government shutdown and keep operations running until March. Musk dismissed the 1,500-page resolution as wasteful, sharing misinformation about its provisions. On X, he falsely claimed it included a nearly 40% pay raise for members of Congress, vaccine mandates, and billions for a new NFL stadium in Washington, DC. The bill explicitly prohibited federal funds from being used for such a stadium and contained no language about vaccine or mask mandates. Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a nongovernmental body advising the incoming Trump administration, echoed his critiques, amplifying unsubstantiated claims. The resolution had proposed $100 billion for disaster relief, $30 billion for farmers, and funding for infrastructure projects, among other measures. Despite bipartisan support for the bill, hardline Republican lawmakers and President-elect Trump opposed it. Musk celebrated the backlash, urging lawmakers to block any legislation until Trump’s inauguration, stating, “No bills should be passed [by] Congress until Jan 20”. He praised GOP representatives who vowed to vote against the measure. Speaker Mike Johnson faces a narrow window to propose an alternative funding plan and avoid a holiday-season government shutdown. Musk claimed victory as the bill faltered, asserting that public pressure on X influenced the outcome. “The voice of the people has triumphed,” he wrote.
