Everything that happened at the 2024 BET Awards

This year's BET awards, held on Sunday the 30th of June, were full of snubs and surprises. If you missed the full show, don’t worry about a thing we have you covered, here is everything you need to know. In a surprising and controversial move, OJ Simpson was included in the In Memoriam roll of this year’s event. The deeply polarizing figure, who died on April 10 at age 76, was identified as a footballer but is seen by many as someone who may have gotten away with murder. It will be interesting to see if Simpson, is also included in the In Memoriam rolls at the upcoming Primetime Emmys or the Oscars. Usher accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award this year, but the audio cut out for a good chunk of his acceptance speech for those of us watching from home. Usher gave a 12-minute acceptance speech, but about four minutes were inaudible for those not in the theater with him. Some have suggested that it may have been due to his use of expletives. “I didn’t write anything because I wanted this moment to be exactly what it was: present [...] I don’t know, man, is it too early for me to receive it? Because I’m still running and gunning and I still love this s-t like I did when I was eight years old,” Usher shared. Usher also spoke about his fractured relationship with his father and gave a shout-out to his sons and daughter. Usher has had a big year, headlining the Super Bowl halftime show and landing a big crossover hit with ‘Good Good’, a collaboration with Summer Walker and 21 Savage. Drake was seemingly snubbed at this year's event. He went into the night with a leading seven nominations but was shut out. Drake was also seen as having been outgunned in the diss-track battle with Kendrick Lamar. Similarly, Sexxy Red went into the night with five nods. 21 Savage, Doja Cat, and Megan Thee Stallion had four each. None walked away winners. Will Smith made the live debut of his latest single, ‘You Can Make It’, in a circle of fire. “I don’t know who needs this right now,” Smith opened his set. “But I am here to tell you, you can make it.” “Nobody gets an easy ride,” Smith, who is in the midst of his comeback from slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars two years ago, told the room. Normani who was set to perform at the event had to cancel her set last minute. The singer took to her Instagram story shortly before the ceremony was set to begin, revealing that she suffered an unspecified injury during rehearsals. On the fashion front, Blac Chyna made heads turn in a see-through white gown that showed off her cleavage. Her sexy new look comes just a year after the rapper went on a makeunder journey, getting a breast and butt reduction. She said that she made the decision to undo her years of fillers because she was 'tired of the look' and wanted to look like herself, again. Did you watch the show?
