Utah man accused of sex crimes against children may finally face trial

Over a two-day hearing, a federal judge heard testimony about the competency of a Utah man who has been arrested multiple times for sex crimes against children, but who has never gone to trial. He now faces charges for downloading and distributing child sex abuse material. Prosecutors hope a new competency evaluation will change that. Over the past decade, Jonathan Soberanis has been charged by Utah prosecutors in five separate cases, ranging from lewdness to aggravated sexual abuse of a child. In four, he was found not competent to stand trial, causing a judge to dismiss the charges. But a new federal evaluator testified Thursday during his competency hearing, saying something no other evaluator has said before: Soberanis is competent.
