Wien river overflows causing severe floods in Vienna, Austria

The Wien River overflowed following heavy rain from Storm Boris in Vienna, Austria. Video captured by Manuel Dauer shows the rising waters along the Neue Donau near Copabeach on the afternoon of September 15. Emergency officials reported that the river's water level in western Vienna surged from 50 centimetres to 2.26 metres in just one day. In the suburb of Penzing, northwest of Vienna, the Wien River also breached its banks in several areas. Homes were evacuated, and streets along with an underground parking garage were inundated. Electricity was cut in three districts of Vienna, and two subway lines were partially closed. Officials have declared the Austrian province, including Vienna, a disaster area due to the extreme weather, which also led to the death of one firefighter during a flood rescue. Storm Boris, a slow-moving low-pressure system, has dumped a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours across Poland, Romania, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, accompanied by intense winds.
