Poppers Are Being Mistaken For Energy Drinks

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received reports of people becoming seriously ill and dying after drinking poppers. Mistaking them for energy drinks, poppers are used as a muscle relaxant, a recreational drug and a drug that improves anal sex. By inhaling the fumes emitted by the liquid, people experience a brief lightheaded high that often enhances their sexual experience. Poppers bottles often look quite similar to energy-shot drinks. However, the FDA says this mistake "can prove fatal." According to the Oxford Medical Case Reports, in 2021, a man consumed five drops of poppers in a sex shop and was rushed to hospital. He was in an “extreme, life-threatening” and suffered from an inflamed windpipe. He also experienced methemoglobinemia, which is a potentially life-threatening build-up of methemoglobin in the blood. The man managed to recover, but the main issue is poppers that are misleadingly marked to disguise the party drug. They’re also often labeled in stores as “air freshener” or “liquid incense", with catchy names like “rush”, “liquid gold” or “buzz.”
