Assam doctor attacked allegedly after Covid patient dies, CM calls it 'barbaric'

A doctor at a Covid care centre (CCC) in Assam was thrashed by a mob on Tuesday. Incident allegedly took place after a Covid-19 positive patient died during treatment. The assault, recorded presumably on phone, triggered a sharp protest from doctors, others. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma called it 'barbaric' & ordered Assam police to arrest culprits. Special DGP, GP Singh responded to CM & said three people had already been arrested. Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati was attacked allegedly by nearly 20 relatives of the patient. Dr Senapati was posted at Udali Covid facility in Hojai district of central Assam. In the video, a group of people is seen hitting the doctor with a broom, utensils & kicking him. Though a policeman is seen in the video, he’s not seen trying to stop the attack. After the incident came to light, IMA's Hojai unit issued a letter to the deputy commissioner. The letter said that the patient was admitted on Tuesday at 11am & died three hours later at 2pm. The letter added that the mob damaged the building & also ransacked instruments at the CCC. The IMA unit said unless culprits are arrested, Hojai doctors would boycott OPD services. It also asked the government to provide all hospitals & CCCs with security cover, CCTV cameras.
