The Indian government has responded to tweets by Rihanna and other celebrities drawing attention to the farmers’ protests in India. A statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs said that the reforms were passed by the Parliament after discussions and added that only a section of farmers have some reservations with some provisions of the laws. Adding that the government has been holding consultations with the protesting unions, the statement also said that some vested interests are misleading the farmers which led to the violence during their tractor rally on Republic Day. ‘Before rushing to comment on such matters, we would urge that the facts be ascertained. The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,’ the statement read.
