The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that Romanian is the second most common language in the UK, excluding English. 472,000 people in the UK now speak Romanian compared to just 68,000 people in 2011. London has the most Romanian speakers, with 1.9% of the population speaking Romanian as their main language or 159,000 people. While Harrow had the highest percentage of its population speaking Romanian, at 7.5%. Other languages in the top 10, excluding English, are Polish, Panjabi, Urdu, Portuguese, Spanish, Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati and Italian. Polish is still the most common language in the UK, apart from English, accounting for 612,000 residents. French dropped from 7 on the list in 2011 to 12 in 2021, while Portuguese and Spanish went from 9 and 10 on the list in 2011 to 5 and 6 in 2021. 91.1% of residents in England and Wales have English as their main language. while 7.1% of people are proficient in English and speak it “well” or “very well”.
