Since we saw ‘Jaws’, shark attacks have been a big fear for summer beachgoers, despite being incredibly rare. Out of the 8 billion people on earth last year, there were only 89 recorded shark bites, and even fewer that resulted in serious injury or death. Regardless of the likelihood of a shark attack, here are a few tips to avoid it as best as possible. Avoid swimming at the mouth of a river or in heavy fishing areas as there tend to be more sharks in these areas. Also, avoid swimming at dusk and dawn as the shark may mistake you for another creature due to the low visibility. Take off all jewelry or reflective objects before entering the water, the flashes of light may look like fish scales to the sharks. If you encounter a shark in the water, don’t panic, most of the time sharks are simply curious about your presence. Always maintain eye contact when a shark is approaching you, if you are aware of its presence it is less likely to attack you.
