Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) calls for extending Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans, which is set to expire on Sept. 9. "Something shocking is about to happen. In one week, tens of thousands of people in our community will lose their Temporary Protected Status: El Salvadorans," he says on the House floor. Montgomery County, MD, where Raskin represents, has a large Salvadoran community and the congressman adds that they have contributed around $732 million to Maryland, calling them a "driver" in the state's prosperity. Raskin also shares his Salvadoran constituents' livelihoods and work in the U.S., which they could be forced to abandon next week. "These neighbors have enriched the social, economic, and cultural life of our state," he says and lists the sectors, such as education and manufacturing, where his Salvadoran constituents have built their careers.
