Many are calling this "tipping fatigue". According to Toast, Americans are tipping more frequently but giving up less for each tip. A recent report by the Wall Street Journal suggests that customers are frustrated by tipping at self checkout counters. One customer even called the measure “emotional blackmail”. While tipping in the US has been up since 2021, customers have complained that tipping is tough to do with constant inflation.
