Through fifth grade teacher Stacy Brewer's lesson series on analyzing an informational text, students get to practice Common Core Standards across all areas of ELA (Speaking & Listening, Reading, and Writing). Students begin by reading a text about Lewis and Clark. They talk about the text in a small group before moving into large group discussion. After spending two periods discussing the text, students then participate in independent writing. Stacy asks the students comprehension questions about the author's viewpoint, which they answer through writing. Stacy works with a small group, providing extra support to ELLs, while the rest of the class works independently.
