Parmigiano-Reggiano makers are planning on inserting microchips into their 90 pound cheese wheels to stop counterfeits. According to reports, the new microchips will be the size of a grain of sand and will be edible, and be placed on a food safe label. Parmigiano-Reggiano, the official and original parmesan cheese, is protected by the EU and can only be made in a part of Northern Italy. Due to its worldwide recognition, the cheese can be sold at a higher price point, as opposed to the regular parmesan sold in the US. The new microchips will be made of silicon and can be scanned to pull up a unique serial ID to prove their authenticity. The microchips cannot be scanned remotely and are not capable of tracking someone who ingests one. Its emergence has interested other industries, including makers of drugs and car parts, who are considering using the chips.
