Every Thoroughbred deserves to be well cared for, valued and supported throughout its life. Today, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing released its new Thoroughbred Welfare Strategy, Together for the Thoroughbred, setting a clear direction for welfare across breeding, racing and life after racing. The strategy establishes a whole of industry framework focused on: • Stronger welfare standards and accountability • Improved traceability from birth through to retirement • Safer racing and training practices • Retraining and rehoming pathways • Greater transparency and public confidence Grounded in the New Zealand developed Five Domains Model, the strategy recognises not only physical health, but also behaviour and mental wellbeing as critical components of welfare. NZTR General Manager Welfare and Industry Capability Sam Fursdon said the strategy reflects both the strong foundation already in place across the industry and a commitment to continuous improvement. “There are many people across the industry who demonstrate genuine care and commitment to their thoroughbreds every day,” she said. “This strategy brings that work together into a clear and consistent framework, reinforcing that welfare is a shared responsibility across the industry.” At the heart of the strategy is a shared commitment to ensuring every Thoroughbred is tracked, cared for and supported throughout its life.
