The House Judiciary Committee opened a hearing Thursday with an empty witness chair after Attorney General William Barr did not appear because of disagreements over whether staff members could ask questions. The hearing lasted only 15 minutes. Chairman Jerry Nadler refused to hear a question from Republican Matt Gaetz, instead cutting of his microphone and ending the hearing. <Blockquote>REP. JERRY NADLER: This committee intends to obtain the information it needs to conduct its constitutional oversight and legislative responsibilities. We will defend the prerogatives of Congress. We'll defend the rights of the American people to know what's going on. We will defend the Constitutional scheme of equal and co-equal branches of government. We will make sure no president becomes a monarch. We need the information without delay. The hearing is adjourned. REP. MATT GAETZ: Is it going to be, Mr. Chairman, there is not going to be a recognition of members who seek legitimate inquiry as to the procedures [microphone cut off]. </blockquote>
