India: Glacier collapse disrupts roads amid extreme weather

Himachal Pradesh, India - February 28, 2025 Extreme weather continues to wreak havoc as heavy rainfall and snowfall trigger glacier collapses, blocking roads and disrupting daily life in high-altitude areas. The incident took place in Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh, northern India, on February 28. The visual shows large glaciers collapsing over several metres as officials assess the site. Speaking to Newslions, the District Police Control Room of Kinnaur stated that the wrath of nature continues in Himachal Pradesh. Due to heavy rainfall, rivers and streams are overflowing, while incidents of cloudbursts and glacier collapses are being reported in the higher-altitude areas of the state. A cloudburst occurred in the Luai Panchayat of Chhota Bhangal, a subdivision under Kangra district’s Baijnath region. This natural disaster created panic in the area. After the cloudburst, a sudden surge of water and debris flowed down from the mountains, significantly increasing the water level in streams. The impact was so severe that debris entered people’s homes and even the hospital premises. Additionally, four vehicles were damaged due to the landslide. Administrative teams engaged in relief efforts have visited the affected areas to assess the situation. Meanwhile, glacier collapses have been reported in Palani Nala of Bhadgram Panchayat, Manda Nala of Tunda Panchayat in Bharmour, and the Yangpa and Jangi streams in Kinnaur district. Due to this, traffic movement on these routes has been completely disrupted, causing trouble for both locals and travellers. The collapse of the glacier in Jangi Nala has completely blocked vehicle movement on NH-5. The upper areas of Himachal Pradesh have been experiencing snowfall for the last two days, with more than three feet of snow accumulating in Kinnaur. There are also reports of glacier collapses at multiple locations in the district. Reports indicate that glaciers have fallen at three locations on the road leading to Jangi’s National Highway 5, including Chhitkul. Meanwhile, heavy snowfall continues in several villages, including Chitkul, Charang, Rakcham, Nesang, Gaiabung, Asrang, Rupa, and Hango.
