A strong earthquake hit Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture on January 1. According to USGS, the magnitude was 7.5. Shaking was felt in widespread areas and tsunami warnings were issued for Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui and Hyogo prefectures, also along the Japan Sea Coast.
