Shot Putter Runs 100m Hurdles To Save Country At European Championship

A Belgian hammer throw and shot-put athlete was unexpectedly forced to compete in the 100-meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships. Jolien Maliga Boumkwo had to step up after her teammate Anne Zagré withdrew due to a last-minute injury. Despite being out of her element, she took on the challenge in a bid to secure crucial points for her nation and maintain its position. As the specialists sprinted ahead, Boumkwo stepped over each hurdle instead of jumping. She ended up finishing with a time of 32.81 seconds and earned two points. Boumkwo, who came in last, reflected on the experience, emphasizing why she participated in the race. "I try not to take myself too seriously as an athlete. The past has taught me that that will only make you cramp. If my two points ensure that we stay in the top division, this will certainly have been worth it," Jolien Boumkwo. Currently at the bottom of the country table, Belgium's fate hangs in the balance at the European Athletics Team Championships.
